Lithograph by T M Baynes after an original drawing by A Mee. Hammersmith Bridge was a chain suspension type, designed by William Tierney Clark (1783-1852) and built in 1825-1827. It was the first suspension bridge to be built across the Thames. Clark designed a number of suspension bridges, the largest and best known being the one built across the Danube at Budapest in 1849. His Hammersmith Bridge was replaced in 1887 by another suspension bridge, designed by civil engineer Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-1891).
